Actor Imran Khan Receives FRRO Notice to Leave India Following Mumbai Protest

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Mumbai has reportedly directed actor Imran Khan to leave India by October 28. The action follows his participation in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai Central on October 10.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya raised concerns about Khan's participation in the political demonstration, pointing to his reported US citizenship and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status. Somaiya approached the Mumbai Police to verify Khan's citizenship and questioned whether a foreign national holding a US passport and OCI card should take part in a political agitation in India.

A Mumbai Police official confirmed that the FRRO served the notice to Khan, who stays in Khar and is in India on an OCI card. The FRRO operates under the Bureau of Immigration and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

During the demonstration organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Khan stated in a widely circulated video that he attended as a citizen to see why freedom of movement and people's voices were being restricted.

Khan, along with approximately 400 other people including Lekha Washington, Nusrat, and Zayn (Marie), was detained during the protest. The demonstrators demanded the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Following the detention, Zayn shared a video alleging that police personnel assaulted and manhandled her, showing bruises she stated she sustained during the incident.
