Agyaat Katha Honors Goan Performing Traditions Under the Direction of Dr. Saish Deshpande
Agyaat Katha is a theatrical production by Abhivyaktee-Panaji, directed by Dr. Saish Deshpande, that reimagines an episode from the Lok-Mahabharat using Goan Katha Gaayan forms.
Agyaat Katha is designed to honor Goan performing traditions, incorporating the structure of Katha Gaayan (story recitation forms) alongside conventions of Indian theatre and dance. The production reflects a reimagined episode from the Lok-Mahabharat involving the Pandavas in exile, featuring conflicts and journeys of self-exploration among Arjun (as Brihannala), Bhima (as Ballava), and Draupadi (as Sairandhri).
The play comments on the weight of expectations, the quest for power, the cost of fitting in, and the balance between masculine and feminine energies. The production features a blend of folk melodies, semi-classical dance, and stylized movements.
The play is directed by Dr. Saish Deshpande, an alumnus of Kala Academy Goa's School of Drama who holds a Doctorate in Dramatics. Since 1988, he has directed 75 or more full-length plays in Konkani, Marathi, Hindi, English, and Sanskrit, and is currently employed as an Announcer and Programmes and Drama Producer at Akashvani – Panaji.
The production is presented by the theatro-cultural organization “Abhivyaktee,” formed in 1997 at Panaji by alumni of the Kala Academy's School of Drama. Abhivyaktee has been active in producing issue-based plays, musicals, and organizing theater and music festivals in Goa.
