Alisha Chinai Reflects on the Success and Impact of 'Made In India'

Singer Alisha Chinai discusses the making and revolutionary impact of her hit song 'Made In India' in a recent conversation.

Alisha Chinai started her singing career with Adventures Of Tarzan in 1985, but achieved a major career turning point with the hit track 'Made In India'. Looking back at the song in a conversation with Komal Nahta, Chinai shared that while she did not expect the track to become a sensation, her gut instinct during recording told her it was special. She noted that she was thinking of her favorite singer, Noor Jehan, while trying to use her inflexion and harkat, and sang it at a high pitch upon the insistence of Biddu.

According to Chinai, everyone who heard the song beforehand remarked that it would either work or flop. When the music video was released alongside Milind Soman, it became a rage and caused a revolution. Chinai highlighted that because music videos were a novelty at the time and MTV had just arrived, the audience was able to see the singer singing the song for the first time, making the timing perfect for the start of the Indian pop revolution.
