Explore the Punjabi play Kanak Di Bali, directed by Gurpreet Singh and produced by Theatre For Theatre, detailing its plot, themes, and background.
About Kanak Di Bali
Kanak Ki Bali follows Taro, an orphaned girl facing suppression, greed, and social injustice while living with her alcoholic uncle and manipulative aunt, Taba. Although she loves a humble bangle seller named Bachna, Taba marries Taro off to Maghar, an older, deceitful man with multiple past marriages. Maghar's current wife, Thakri, fears the marriage due to her inability to conceive. After Taro escapes to Bachna's home, Bachna's mother, Nihali, initially resists their union because of her own past betrayal. When Maghar tracks Taro down, a violent confrontation leads to Bachna's death. Ultimately, Nihali accepts Taro as her daughter, and the two kill Maghar to symbolize female solidarity and resistance against patriarchal oppression.

Director's Note
Balwant Gargi's play Kanak Di Bali (The Sacrifice of Wheat) portrays the soul of rural Punjab, examining agrarian life, economic exploitation, rigid religious customs, superstition, gender oppression, and agricultural inequalities. The production uses simple stage design, folk-inspired music, and earthy language to reflect the issues of rural Punjab, including farmer suicides, falling land values, and agricultural crises.
