An Overview of the Play 'Sakha' and Writer-Director Kashyap Kamal

Explore the themes of the play 'Sakha', written and directed by Kashyap Kamal, and the work of the cultural group Achhinjal.

Sakha is a serious attempt to find a way to end the endless suffering caused by life's various tragedies, focusing on a human being grappling with problems and constantly struggling to overcome them. Instead of accepting superficial classifications of problems arising from natural human behavior, the work emphasizes deep reflection and delving into their roots.

By engaging in dialogue and discussion on the thoughts, differences, and conflicts within human relationships, Sakha attempts to create a new vision and definition for society. The play confronts questions where the responsibility of marriage and the qualities of friendship merge, with the central theme being a new term for the relationship between a man and a woman by blending marriage and friendship.

Writer and Director

Kashyap Kamal, originally named Pawan Kant Jha, was born in 1976 in Bhatsimer village, Madhubani district, Bihar. Active in theatre and Maithili culture for three decades, he has written original Maithili plays including Gorakhdhandha, Bispipri, Sakha, Bojh, Bhot, and Vigrah, and has acted in numerous productions. He translated the Hindi plays Araati: The Dark Side and Kachot into Maithili and directed three original Maithili plays. Aiming to preserve Mithila's cultural heritage, he is creating an inventory of intangible cultural heritage, conducting research on elements such as Rasanchauki, Panji Management, Dak Bachan, Salhesh Utsav, and collective ritual songs, and working on a digital archive for folk and traditional culture. He received the Mithila Gaurav Samman in 2025.

Group

Achhinjal was established to fulfill the socio-cultural responsibility of preserving, promoting, and reusing invaluable heritage in the global context. The group creates a reference list and register of the intangible cultural heritage of the Mithila region, working on topics like the folk instrument Rasanchauki, oral tradition, postal correspondence, and the register system. Over the past three years, the group has given over one hundred performances of the folk instrument Rasanchauki and several Maithili plays—including Gorakhdhandha, Haye Re Hamar Gharbali, Buddhimati Ki Bhains, Panch Patra, and Sakha—at various locations and festivals. For seven years, Achhinjal has continuously organized the National Folk Festival and also organizes the Dharohar Shrinkhea program.
