Ayushmann Khurrana Enters the Spy Genre with Udta Teer
Ayushmann Khurrana stars in Udta Teer, playing a Pakistani spy who loses his memory, bringing a unique twist to the traditional Bollywood spy film genre.
Ayushmann Khurrana is entering Hindi cinema's spy genre with Udta Teer, applying his philosophy of placing unconventional protagonists inside familiar genres. In the film, Ayushmann plays a Pakistani spy who faces an unusual complication: he loses his memory. Rather than focusing on a hyper-competent secret agent who controls his surroundings, the trailer treats espionage as a foundation for comedy, satire, mistaken identity, and chaos.
Throughout his career, Ayushmann has frequently taken recognizable Hindi-film genres and altered how the protagonist behaves. From Vicky Donor and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan to Bala, Dream Girl, and Andhadhun, his characters often navigate unexpected problems while losing control of their situations, battling insecurities, and panicking in difficult circumstances.
By removing certainty from the protagonist, Udta Teer creates comic possibilities where the central joke is that circumstances have robbed a potentially capable spy of his identity. Rather than playing a conventional action star, Ayushmann's casting allows the spy genre to be recalibrated around an actor known for rearranging the rules of familiar Bollywood genres.
