BADZAAT: A Theatrical Adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Brute

An overview of the play BADZAAT, an Urdu adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Brute directed by Javed Sameer and produced by the Delhi-based theatre society Creative Adda.

BADZAAT

BADZAAT is based on The Brute, a story written by Anton Chekhov and adapted by Mrs. Bilquis Zafirul Hassan. The play features a conflict between Mrs. Khan, who is determined to mourn her unfaithful husband, and Nadir Changezi, a creditor hounding her for a loan repayment. The argument escalates until Changezi challenges the widow to a duel. When Mrs. Khan accepts, Changezi is overcome by attraction rather than contempt, and the play ends with a marriage proposal instead of a duel.

Director

Javed Sameer started acting during his school days and later attended a theatre direction workshop from NSD. He has acted under renowned directors and worked with the LTG repertory and as a guest artist in the National School of Drama (NSD) repertory company. He has received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Yuva Nirdeshak Samman from Sahitya Kala Parishad, New Delhi. His directorial credits include Safed Khoon, Badzaat, Jallian Wala Bagh, Sikander Ki Jeet, Pappu Fail Nahi Hua Hai, Sarab – E – Tamanna, Jungli jaanwar, Chehrey, Urgent Meeting, and Patte Sookhe Pedh ara, among others.

Director's Note

In directing Anton Chekhov's adapted Urdu play Badzaat, Javed Sameer emphasized the interplay between comedy and human complexities. The characters Mrs. Khan and Nadir Changezi explore love, pride, and the absurdity of human behavior through comedic yet profound interactions.

Group

Creative Adda is a Delhi-based theatre society established in 2013 to organize stage performances and theatre workshops. The group promotes literacy, culture, and social activities through awareness programs and educational workshops. Their notable shows include Safed Khoon, Badzaat, Jungli Jaanwar, Sikander Ki Jeet, Patte Sookhey Pedh Hara, and Jeb Katra.
