Christa Pike Remains in Critical Condition Following Botched Execution

Christa Pike was hospitalized on the night of September 30, 2026, following a botched execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. The 50-year-old Pike remains in critical condition and is on a ventilator. Her attorney, Stephen Ferrell, stated that he believes Pike may not fully recover.

Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital during the attempted execution. Legal expert Robin Maher, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, told Nexstar’s WKRN that the event was unprecedented, marking the first time someone survived two doses of a lethal injection. Maher noted that under Tennessee's death penalty protocol, a second dose of pentobarbital can be administered only if the first dose does not result in death.
