Christa Pike Survives Botched Execution After Two Lethal Doses

Christa Pike's botched execution has raised questions about warnings her attorneys gave Tennessee officials months prior. The 50-year-old lone female inmate on death row in Tennessee survived an attempted lethal injection after prison officials administered two lethal doses of pentobarbital.

Witness reporters revealed she was still breathing and snoring loudly more than 40 minutes after the drugs were administered, and she was later taken by ambulance to an off-site medical facility. Pike's lawyers had previously warned the court about a potential botched execution, citing her underlying health condition, including small and compromised veins, and years of psychological trauma.

Following the failed execution attempt on September 30, 2026, her attorneys—Randy Spivey, Kelly Gleason, Stephen Ferrell, and Luke Ihnen of Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee—released a statement noting that they had already warned about the problem beforehand.
