Cinepolis India’s Ashish Misra Predicts Historic Rs. 15,000 Crore Box Office in 2026

Cinepolis India's Ashish Misra shares box office insights for 2026, discussing Hollywood's performance, expectations for Ramayana, and a potential historic Rs. 15,000 crore milestone.

By the end of July, international films amassed Rs. 1,424 crores at the Indian box office, bringing 2026 close to the all-time annual record of Rs. 1,595 crores set in 2019. Spider-Man: Brand New Day led the charge as the highest-grossing international film ever in India. International cinema commanded a 15% share of the Indian box office in August, up from 10% in 2025.

The overall Indian box office has also grown consistently, with cumulative gross box office standing at Rs. 11,833 crores in 2024 and rising to Rs. 13,395 crores in 2025. Ashish Misra, Head of Commercialisation at Cinepolis India, believes the cumulative box office could cross the Rs. 15,000 crore mark for the first time in 2026.

Discussing Hollywood's resurgence, Misra noted that after 2023 strikes delayed productions, this year has seen renewed interest across genres. Films like Obsession, Michael, and Project Hail Mary performed well, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day boosted expectations for upcoming releases like Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part Three, and Jumanji: Open World in the final quarter of 2026.

Addressing potential challenges in dividing shows among anticipated December releases—including Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part Three, Jumanji: Open World, and Shah Rukh Khan’s King—Misra stated that programming is based on audience demand.

High expectations surround Ramayana due to its theme of good versus evil and massive scale. Misra stated it has the potential to become the biggest film the Indian film industry has ever seen and take Indian culture and heritage to global audiences. Additionally, the makers of Ramayana unveiled a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama on the actor’s birthday.

Misra concluded that 2026 is shaping up to be the best-ever year for the Indian film industry, supported not just by blockbusters, but by strong performances from small and medium-budget films.
