Dia Mirza Rekhi on Choosing Purpose-Driven Roles and Translating Advocacy Into Action
Dia Mirza Rekhi reflects on her 25-year career, her approach to choosing projects with purpose, her work in environmental and social advocacy, and her perspective on fashion and heritage.
Twenty-five years after making her acting debut, Dia Mirza Rekhi continues to choose projects based on the purpose behind the story rather than the size of her role. Having worked across mainstream cinema, production, and socially conscious projects, she considers the larger reason behind a project before deciding to be part of it.
Speaking about her approach to work, Dia stated, "Why is this story being told, and what impact is it going to have?" She added that the questions surrounding a character are equally important to her, noting that the contribution and depth of a character matter more than screen time.
Her approach has been reinforced by the response to her latest show, Operation Safed Sagar. She praised the research, writing, shooting, and execution involved in the military war drama, describing the approach to the story as unhurried.
Dia's sense of purpose also extends to her advocacy outside acting. As a UN SDG Advocate and UNEP Goodwill Ambassador, as well as through her association with Save the Children, she has spoken about women's participation in decision-making, climate leadership, representation, and the rights and wellbeing of vulnerable children. She emphasized that "just speaking up is not enough," and that advocacy must be followed by action. Addressing climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, she noted that she remains an optimist who believes people care enough about their survival to do better.
In fashion, Dia focuses on seeking stories rather than following changing trends, drawing inspiration from handwoven textiles, traditional crafts, and artisans. Tracing this interest to her mother's wardrobe, she shared that one of her most valued possessions is her great-grandmother's saree, which she estimates to be at least 300 years old.
