Director Kaushal Oza Explains Why Little Thomas Is Set in the 90s
Writer-director Kaushal Oza discusses his semi-autobiographical film Little Thomas, starring Gulshan Devaiah and Rasika Dugal, including the decision to set it in the mid-90s.
Writer-director Kaushal Oza's semi-autobiographical film Little Thomas stars Gulshan Devaiah and Rasika Dugal. Oza shared that the film explores a simple premise centered around a child wanting a little brother.
When discussing the decision to set the film in the 1990s rather than the present day, Oza noted that kids today would simply use Google or ChatGPT to find out where babies come from. Setting it in the mid-90s allowed for the fun of children finding wrong answers and trying out different ideas with sincerity.
The mid-90s setting also highlights a clash between the old and the new. In the film, the father, played by Gulshan Devaiah, runs a family bakery business facing new challenges during the liberalization era.
Oza also spoke about the casting, stating that Gulshan Devaiah and Rasika Dugal were his first choices and that their chemistry brings out lived-in nuances of a married couple who have been together for 10 years.
Additionally, Oza turned lyricist for the song Adults Wrong Hai, using the pen name Iago, inspired by Shakespeare.
