Dr. King's Last Night (I Have a Dream) Explores the Final Hours of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
An overview of the play Dr. King's Last Night (I Have a Dream), based on Katori Hall's The Mountaintop, directed by Buddhika Damayantha and translated into Sinhala by Chulananda Samaranayake.
Set on April 3, 1968, at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, the speculative fictional drama Dr. King's Last Night (I Have a Dream) explores the final hours of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. before his assassination. Written by American playwright Katori Hall, the play is based on her work The Mountaintop.
The story takes place in a single hotel room where Dr. King is visited by a hotel maid named Camae. Bringing coffee and a cigarette, Camae reveals a different side of the civil rights leader, ultimately warning him of his imminent death and forcing him to confront his mortality.
The production is directed by Buddhika Damayantha, a professional stage director in Sri Lanka who has directed 23 Sinhala plays. The Sinhala adaptation, titled Mata Sihinayak Etha (I Have a Dream), was translated by Sri Lankan writer Chulananda Samaranayake. The production is associated with the Red Wings Theatre Group, which has been active in Sri Lanka for two decades.
