Gudiya Ki Shadi: A Bundeli Theatre Production by the Madhya Pradesh School of Drama
Explore the background, story, and direction of 'Gudiya Ki Shadi', a student theatre production highlighting Bundelkhandi culture and folk heritage.
Gudiya Ki Shadi tells the story of a lower-middle-class family in a Bundelkhandi town. The daughter, Gudiya, faces constant neglect and taunts due to her appearance and dark complexion, yet maintains a positive outlook on life. When an unexpected event makes her appear even more unattractive just a day before her wedding, her sister-in-law steps in to handle the crisis.
Written by actress and writer Samta Sagar, the play incorporates Bundeli marriage rituals and endangered folk music to highlight the suffering of daughters neglected due to their appearance, while showcasing the authentic flavor of everyday regional life.
The production is directed by the Director of the Madhya Pradesh School of Drama, Bhopal, whose background includes training at the National School of Drama, acting and directing numerous plays, and working in Hindi cinema and OTT platforms.
As part of the preparation for this production, students participated in a traveling folk theatre workshop in Sagar to experience regional life, traditions, dialects, and folk arts firsthand, supporting the Madhya Pradesh School of Drama's objective to preserve and promote regional folk cultural heritage.
