Gurmmeet Singh Reveals The Good The Bad And The Ugly Inspired Mirzapur The Movie

Director Gurmmeet Singh discusses the success of Mirzapur The Movie, its cinematic style inspired by Spaghetti Westerns, working with Jitendra Kumar, and his production house Cheetah On The Moon.

Director Gurmmeet Singh shared insights into the massive success of Mirzapur The Movie, which crossed the Rs. 200 crore mark in cinemas. Speaking about the cinematic transition from the web series to the big screen, Singh explained that the creative team intentionally aimed for a film-like narrative structure from the writing stage.

To achieve a distinct visual texture, the makers utilized Jaisalmer and its sand dunes in Rajasthan, drawing inspiration from Spaghetti Westerns like The Good The Bad And The Ugly (1966). The production utilized extreme wide lenses, atmospheric elements like fire and water, and larger set pieces to create an adventurous tone.

Addressing the casting change for the character of Babloo, Singh praised Jitendra Kumar for stepping into the role previously played by Vikrant Massey in the web series, noting that Kumar brought his own individuality and made the team comfortable during production. Singh also confirmed that he has not yet spoken to Vikrant Massey following the release.

Regarding the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) cuts—which included 35 seconds of intimate scenes, muted cuss words in 4 places, and replaced abuses in 6 places—Singh noted that the board was collaborative and viewed the project as a piece of pop culture with its own legacy. He added that a middle path was found to keep the film within appropriate boundaries while preserving the world of Mirzapur.

Looking ahead, Singh confirmed that Mirzapur will return in some shape or form once the team collectively decides on the direction. He also discussed his production house, Cheetah On The Moon, founded with partner Vishal Bajaj, which aims to create diverse stories, IPs, and world-building projects.
