Harman Baweja Revisits Diljale Sets and Recalls Asking His Father What a Director Does

As Diljale marks 30 years, Harman Baweja reflects on visiting the set at age 15, watching his father Harry Baweja direct, and learning about the collaborative nature of filmmaking.

Thirty years after the release of Diljale, Harman Baweja has reflected on visiting the film's sets at age 15 and recalling an early experience that shaped his understanding of filmmaking. Directed by his father, filmmaker Harry Baweja, the film featured contributions from Saroj Khan on choreography, Veeru Devgan on action, and Naidu on camera work.

Harman recalled watching the shoot of the song 'Shaam Hai Dhuan Dhuan' and eventually asking his father what his role was since every department had a defined job. According to Harman, Harry Baweja explained that a director's job is to effectively tell and narrate a story in the audiovisual medium by uniting all technicians and crew members under a single vision.

Another memory from the same shoot involved revisiting 'Shaam Hai Dhuan Dhuan' after Harry Baweja and composer Anu Malik were initially not completely convinced with the recorded result. Harman noted that the experience taught him the importance of trusting creative instinct.

Reflecting on the experience, Harman shared how watching his father, actors, technicians, and choreographers helped him become a better filmmaker. Three decades later, Harman works across acting, production, and writing as Managing Director and producer at Baweja Studios, with projects including Mrs., System, Haq, Kaptaan, Bhagwat Chapter One: Raakshas, Dil Ka Darwaja, Jugaddu, and Captain India.
