Jay-Z Opens Up About Estranged Father Adnis Reeves in New HBO Docu-Series

Jay-Z recalls meeting his estranged dad, Adnis Reeves, a month before his death

Jay-Z is currently drawing attention for his newly released HBO documentary series, JAY-Z in 8. In the series, the 56-year-old rapper opens up about a painful chapter of his life involving his estranged father, Adnis Reeves.

Jay-Z was 11 years old when Adnis left his wife, Gloria Carter, and their children. In episode 4 of the docu-series, the rapper recalled meeting his estranged father a month before he passed away in June 2003.

During the episode, the rapper recalled that the first time his mother, Gloria, planned a meeting with Adnis, he did not show up, leaving Jay-Z feeling heartbroken and destroyed. A week later, Gloria tried to arrange another meeting. Jay-Z recalled his mother saying, "Call it a week later, she comes back, 'Wanna meet your dad?' I’m like, why are you doing this to me? No. She’s like, 'You have to do it.'"
