When Jim Carrey and Melissa Womer met, he was a stand-up comedian and she worked as a cocktail waitress at the Comedy Store. After dating for two years, they married in 1987 when Melissa was pregnant with their child. Melissa held two jobs as a waitress and masseuse in L.A. to pay the bills while Carrey made USD 25 a night, supporting him throughout their marriage.

Carrey's career changed when he was approached for the sketch show In Living Color, leading to recognition and eventual superstardom in 1994 with roles in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber.
