John Goodman’s struggle with alcoholism nearly made him leave Roseanne
John Goodman became a household name for playing Dan Conner in the sitcom Roseanne, but he nearly walked away from the show at one point. In an interview with TODAY, Goodman revealed he struggled with stress and alcoholism at the height of the show's success in the mid-90s, which made him feel he had to leave. He stated, “At first it was exciting. Then it got frightening when I lost my anonymity.”
In 1993, Goodman won a Golden Globe Award for best actor for his role on the show. As fame brought a loss of privacy and disillusionment, he turned to alcohol to cope. It was only after giving up drinking that he was able to lose nearly 200 pounds.
