Karna No Vesh – Bhavai Explores Mahabharata Tale Through Traditional Forms
Karna No Vesh – Bhavai brings the Mahabharata story of Karna to the stage, combining classical Sanskrit theatre roots with traditional Bhavai performance elements.
About Karna No Vesh – Bhavai
On the sixteenth day of the great war of the Mahabharata, with Bhishma fallen, Karna steps forward to fight for the Kauravas alongside his charioteer, Shalya. Karna reflects on his identity, caste, social status, the futility of war, the curse from his guru Parshuram, and the deception by Indra and Krishna regarding his divine kavach and kundal before meeting his ultimate end.
The production is written by Mahakavi Bhasa, translated by Dr. Mahesh Champaklal, and directed by J. S. Chari. Presented by the theatre group Triveni, founded in 1960, the play explores the journey through the performance and practices of Bhavai in dialogue with Sanskrit plays, weaving in melodious Bhavai songs, prayers, Garba, acrobatics, and slapstick.
