Kiran Rao and Saba Azad Support Imran Khan Amid Legal Trouble Over Mumbai Protest
Filmmaker Kiran Rao and actress Saba Azad have expressed support for actor Imran Khan on social media after he faced legal action and an FRRO notice following his participation in a Mumbai protest.
Actor Imran Khan's participation in a demonstration organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in Mumbai has resulted in a debate and legal action, prompting filmmaker Kiran Rao and actress Saba Azad to voice their support for him on social media.
Kiran Rao shared a news report on Instagram Stories expressing disbelief over the situation, questioning the Mumbai police and highlighting Imran's long history in India. She noted that he has spent 40 of his 43 years in the country studying, working, and living.
Saba Azad also used Instagram to react to reports regarding the actor, reposting a journalist's note about the arrest and expressing her strong disapproval of the development.
The controversy stems from a CJP protest calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Following the demonstration, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya filed a police complaint stating that the actor's participation breached restrictions for foreign citizens. The complaint was sent to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), which issued a notice directing Imran to leave India by October 28, citing that an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card does not allow participation in protests under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
Conversely, industry figures Raza Murad and Ashoke Pandit supported the stance that foreign nationals should not interfere in India's domestic affairs, with Raza Murad also slamming the actor for his involvement.
