Madonna Returns to the MTV VMAs Stage After 23 Years

Madonna's comeback on the MTV VMAs stage marked her return to performing at the American award show after 23 years, following her attendance at a few VMAs after 2003 without performing on stage. Taking center stage in 2026, Madonna's latest appearance left fans in awe, though social media users also discussed her appearing 'unfocused' during the show. Viewers had questions after Madonna seemed to briefly forget why she was on stage.

Back in 2003, Madonna created a pop culture controversy by sharing a kiss with Britney Spears during a performance at the MTV VMAs, which also involved the reaction of Britney's ex, Justin Timberlake. For her 2026 return, Madonna took the stage with a star-studded list of collaborators, including Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter.
