Molokhu Explores the Life of a Neglected Yet Indispensable Rural Figure
Learn about the play Molokhu, directed by Bhaskar Boruah and performed by the Joonak group, highlighting the story of Biju in rural society.
Molokhu
The play Molokhu portrays the life of a young man named Biju, whose childhood, youth, love, and neglect form the core of the story. Although not counted among the important people of society, Biju is essential to its existence. Living in a community where he helps everyone—from the oldest man to the youngest boy, and from young women to elderly ladies—he extends a helping hand without expecting anything in return.
Biju's simplicity and contentment define his approach to love. Rather than leaving his village for work, he stays and creates his own livelihood through farming and small-scale self-employment. Since childhood, he has stood up for what is right, protesting whenever he is denied what he deserves. Biju represents the many individuals who quietly hold society together through selfless service while remaining unrecognized and unvalued.
Writer and Director
Bhaskar Boruah is an actor, playwright, director, actor trainer, and theatre practitioner who graduated from the National School of Drama in New Delhi in 2015 with a specialization in acting. He established the theatre group “JOONAK” in 2008. Boruah has directed numerous stage plays, acted in 75 stage plays, and participated in 30 National and International theatre festivals, working with acclaimed theatre directors from India and abroad.
Director's Note
According to the director, Biju was a real, living person rather than a fictional character, reflecting individuals found in rural society. Biju represents someone essential to everyone, yet remembered only when needed. The neglect shown toward him by society forms the soul of his character. While drama has traditionally portrayed kings, princes, heroes, heroines, landlords, and leaders, Molokhu tells the story of an indispensable yet neglected and uncelebrated individual.
Group
Formed in 2008 by enthusiasts, the “Joonak” group visualizes the basic concept of drama at the village level and brings hidden talent from the grassroots to the core view. Guided by Bhaskar Boruah, the organization has implemented various drama plans, ethnic-cultural shows, and workshops to foster enthusiasm among village children. The group has produced and staged numerous plays and participated in the National Theatre festival in Tirupattur, Vellore, Tamil Nadu.
