Naachni: A Powerful Solo Theatrical Performance Exploring Art and Exploitation

Naachni is a solo theatrical performance exploring the fragile line between art, exploitation, and the struggles of traditional female performers, written by Bhanu Bharti and directed by Madhur Bhatia.

Naachni, meaning 'the dancer', is a powerful solo and theatrical performance that explores the fragile line between art and exploitation. The title symbolizes both the art form and the artist, a woman balancing between grace and struggle against the harsh backdrop of patriarchy, social marginalization, and the commodification of art under the controlling gaze of men known as Rasiks.

Through a blend of song, movement, and striking imagery, the play delves into themes of desire, dignity, resistance, and survival. It questions gender, power, and the human cost of artistic expression, asking who truly determines the worth of art and who benefits from the artist's sacrifice.

The play is written by Bhanu Bharti, a visionary playwright and theatre director with over four decades of experience, a graduate of the National School of Drama, and a Sangeet Natak Akademi Award winner for Direction. It is directed by Madhur Bhatia, a passionate theatre practitioner with a Master’s degree in Theatre from Panjab University and a Junior Fellowship recipient from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

In the director's note, Madhur Bhatia explains that the story highlights the ongoing struggle between art, identity, and dignity faced by traditional female performers, aiming to bring forward their pain, resilience, and humanity.

The production is presented by Kalandhika Nritya Natya Sanstha Samiti, a registered cultural society based in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, founded in 2008 by Dr. Rakhi Dubey.
