Pratik Gandhi and Arshad Warsi Discuss Appearance-Based Expectations in the Film Industry
Pratik Gandhi and Arshad Warsi recently discussed appearance-based expectations in the film industry, with Gandhi recalling how he lost television roles early in his career for not looking 'rich' enough.
Pratik Gandhi and Arshad Warsi recently discussed the appearance-based expectations that actors can face in the film industry. Their comments came during a broader conversation regarding beauty standards in Bollywood, which followed Salman Khan’s remarks on Bigg Boss addressing trolls who targeted Katrina Kaif over her postpartum body. The actors noted that such expectations affect men as well as women.
In an interview with News18, Pratik Gandhi shared that he missed out on television roles during the early part of his career because he did not fit a “rich” look. He noted that casting messages forwarded to aspiring actors still specify requirements for "rich-looking" actors. Gandhi called the requirement weird and stated he does not know what a "rich look" entails.
Arshad Warsi described the idea as "the stupidest thing ever." Director Tigmanshu Dhulia also contributed to the conversation, connecting the perception to India's preference for fair skin and the assumption that wealthy people are fair-skinned, which influences the casting of tall and fair-complexioned actors for affluent roles.
Warsi spoke about being realistic regarding his appearance and roles, stating that he is not 6’2" and would not be cast as characters like Thor. Both actors will appear together in the crime drama Ghamasaan, directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. Additionally, Warsi's upcoming projects include Shah Rukh Khan’s King, while Gandhi is set to appear in Woh Ladki Hai Kahaan? and Hum Hindustani.
