Rajkummar Rao Responds to Criticism Over Dada First-Look Poster

Rajkummar Rao has addressed the criticism surrounding the first-look poster of Dada, the upcoming biopic on former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. The poster, unveiled on July 8 to coincide with Ganguly’s birthday, received a mixed response on social media with users questioning its visual execution.

Speaking to Mashable India, Rajkummar acknowledged the backlash and stated that the team behind the film has taken note of the response. The actor noted that the creators have learned they need to take their time rather than rush, while also recognizing Ganguly's significant fan following.

The first-look poster recreated Ganguly's shirtless celebration waving the Indian flag at Lord’s after the 2002 NatWest Trophy final. Although the visual drew online criticism, Ganguly reacted positively, calling it “the best gift ever.”

Portraying Ganguly involves going beyond appearances and iconic moments. Rajkummar revealed that he has met Sourav Ganguly many times, spent time with him in Kolkata, shot at his home and at Eden Gardens, and discussed personal aspects of Ganguly’s life to understand his mindset.

Calling Ganguly a legend, Rajkummar praised his impact on Indian cricket and the national team's identity, stating that he laid the foundation for the current Indian team.

Rajkummar is currently promoting Prahaar: The Ujjwal Nikam Story, directed by Avinash Arun and produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films. The courtroom drama, which also features Wamiqa Gabbi, Lalit Prabhakar, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Sikandar Kher, is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 16. Rajkummar will star as Sourav Ganguly in Dada, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane.
