Ramesh Taurani Recalls Alka Yagnik’s Rise and 1990s Hindi Film Music

Producer Ramesh Taurani discussed the 1990s Hindi music landscape on Komal Nahta’s Game Changers: The Music Series, recalling Alka Yagnik's rise to prominence and how she received the most songs during the decade.

Producer Ramesh Taurani recently reflected on the changing dynamics of Hindi film music in the 1990s, recalling how Alka Yagnik emerged as a leading female playback singer of the decade. Taurani spoke alongside his brother Kumar Taurani on Komal Nahta’s Game Changers: The Music Series.

Discussing the period, Taurani noted that established voices like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle remained important, while a new generation gained prominence. “Back then, Lata Ji and Asha Ji were already established. When we used to make music, Lata Ji was our first preference, followed by Alka and Anuradha,” Taurani stated.

He recalled the emergence of singers including Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal, Alka Yagnik, and Udit Narayan. According to Taurani, films like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Aashiqui, Saajan, and Phool Aur Kaante helped establish these new voices as their songs became hits.

Taurani also compared the newer singers to the previous generation, noting that Anuradha Paudwal was viewed as a successor to Lata Mangeshkar, while Alka Yagnik was positioned as comparable to Asha Bhosle. According to Taurani, after Paudwal became exclusive to T-Series and stopped singing for films, Alka Yagnik began receiving a wider variety of assignments, including solos, duets, and shayari.

“The situation was such that, among Udit, Sanu and Sonu, Alka Ji was getting the most songs,” Taurani added.
