Ramesh Taurani Reveals How a Rs. 5 Lakh Cheque Helped Launch Patthar Ke Phool

Ramesh Taurani shared how his music company acquired the rights to Patthar Ke Phool and how a Rs. 5 lakh cheque helped fund payments for Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, and writer Salim saab.

Ramesh Taurani and Kumar Taurani discussed their career and experiences working on film music with Komal Nahta. Ramesh recalled acquiring music rights for films like Gunahon Ka Devta (1990) and Elaan-E-Jung (1989), before eventually securing the music rights for Patthar Ke Phool (1991).

According to Ramesh, Salman Khan did not have any films in his pipeline three months after the release of Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). Salim saab subsequently asked G P Sippy to announce that he was producing Salman's next film to give his career a boost, even if the film was not actually made.

After reading the announcement in Film Information magazine, Ramesh visited G P Sippy's office to acquire the music rights and requested that the Maine Pyar Kiya team—music director Raamlaxman, lyricist Dev Kohli, and singers S P Balasubrahmanyam and Lata Mangeshkar—be brought on board. Around the same time, Viveck Vaswani wanted to make an Rs. 80 lakh project called Patthar Ke Phool starring Salman Khan and Raveena Tandon, which G P Sippy initially declined before deciding to activate the project after Taurani's interest in the music.

Taurani negotiated the music rights for Rs. 10 lakhs after Raamlaxman quoted a fee of Rs. 12 lakhs. Ramesh stated that they gave G P Sippy a first cheque of Rs. 5 lakhs, which was used to make payments to Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, and writer Salim saab, ultimately allowing the film to go on floors.
