Sabbir Khan Explains Unconventional Release Strategy for Supernatural Thriller Adbhut
Director Sabbir Khan discusses his supernatural psychological thriller Adbhut, its television and JioHotstar premiere, and securing a U/A certificate.
Director Sabbir Khan has opened up about the unusual release strategy for his supernatural psychological thriller Adbhut. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Diana Penty, Shreya Dhanwanthary, and Rohan Mehra, the film premiered on television before arriving on JioHotstar.
Discussing the delay and release path, Khan explained that the film was originally slated for a 2023-24 release and first premiered on SET Max. According to the director, delays were caused by the proposed merger between Sony and Zee, which took a year and a half to sort out before eventually not happening. The project was later picked up by JioHotstar.
Although Sony Pictures initially considered a theatrical release, discussions stalled due to post-pandemic theatrical conditions. Khan also noted that the film was conceptualized ahead of the current horror wave.
Unlike many horror films that receive an 'A' certificate, Adbhut received a clean U/A certificate from the CBFC with no cuts. Khan attributed this to focusing on a story-centric, psychological approach rather than typical jump scares, allowing families to watch it together without cringing.
Speaking on the cast, Khan shared that Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Diana Penty, and Shreya Dhanwanthary were his first choices. Khan had previously worked with Siddiqui on Munna Michael and noted their shared comfort level. The film also features the late Vikram Gokhale, who dubbed for his portions before his passing, marking his second collaboration with Khan following Nikamma (2022).
