Actor Shefali Shah has released her debut book, The Audacity of Being: A Sort-of Memoir, published on October 1, 2026. In an interview, Shah opened up about what prompted her to write the book, why she initially considered fiction instead of a memoir, and how she decided which parts of her personal life to share.

Reflecting on her writing background, Shah shared that she previously maintained a blog and regularly shares her thoughts on social media. Although a book had been suggested to her before, she initially wanted to start with fiction. However, after considering her publisher's experience in the business and realizing the ownership she had over her own story—stating, “I have copyright over my own story”—she agreed to the memoir.

Shah explained that humour was central to the tone of the book to ensure it remained an engaging, fun read rather than a serious account with a definitive moral. As she worked on the manuscript, conversations with her publisher encouraged her to incorporate aspects of her acting career, reflecting the roles she plays and how they shaped her as a person.

Shah has left the interpretation of her experiences to her readers, noting that she does not expect the book to offer a prescribed takeaway.
