Shekhar Suman Defends Sanjay Dutt Following Shekhar Tonite Remarks Controversy
Shekhar Suman has defended Sanjay Dutt over recent controversy surrounding the actor's remarks on Shekhar Tonite, stating the comments were innocuous and meant in a positive spirit.
Shekhar Suman has expressed support for Sanjay Dutt following the controversy over Dutt's recent remarks on Shekhar Tonite. Dutt spoke about the country's current state during an episode aired around Gandhi Jayanti, which drew attention on social media. Dutt later clarified that his remarks were part of a scripted, light-hearted conversation.
Speaking to NDTV, Shekhar Suman defended Dutt and stated that the actor's comments were not intended to offend anyone. Suman described Shekhar Tonite as a satirical, pro-people, unbiased, and democratic show.
Discussing the controversy, Suman mentioned that he has known Sanjay Dutt for years and believes the comments were made in a positive spirit. Suman told NDTV, “Sanjay Dutt has huge respect for our country and fellow countrymen, and what he said was completely innocuous and in a very positive way. He should not be penalised and maligned for what he never said or meant.” Suman added, “I know him for years; he is a good man who loves his country and has utmost regard for it.”
During his appearance on Shekhar Tonite around Gandhi Jayanti, Dutt praised Indians for being welcoming and large-hearted, but stated that he felt a sense of peace was missing. Dutt said, “The people of this country are so lovely. There should be peace here. I can't feel that peace in our country anymore. We Indians are large-hearted people, and we are hospitable. We have given so much, and we should always remain that way. I pray to Shivji that those days come back soon.”
Following reactions to the episode, Dutt took to X to clarify his position, stating he never intended to hurt or disrespect anyone. Dutt wrote, “I would like to clarify that it was never my intention to hurt, offend, or disrespect the sentiments of any individual, community, or institution.” The actor explained that the conversation was scripted and intended to be humorous and light-hearted, connecting the tone to the humor and satire of the Munna Bhai films and the idea of “Gandhigiri.” He added that his words were interpreted outside their intended context.
Suman backed Dutt's explanation, arguing that Dutt should not face criticism for an unintended interpretation and reiterating that the show uses humor and satire while remaining pro-people, unbiased, and democratic.
