SWANG – JAS KI TAS: An Adaptation of Vijaydan Detha’s Story
Swang – Jas Ki Tas, directed by Akshay Singh Thakur and produced by the Rangabharan Theatre Group, is an adaptation of Vijaydan Detha’s story exploring power, oppression, and human stubbornness.
An adaptation of Vijaydan Detha’s story, the play Swang – Jas Ki Tas unfolds in a village ruled by a powerful Thakur known for his temper and irrational decisions. After he issues a bizarre command requiring all water-filled wells to be filled with sand, the villagers face distress and turn to BadiMaaji, the Thakur’s mother, for help. Though a respected Chaudhary helps bring the Thakur back following a dispute, the Thakur ultimately repeats his irrational command, reflecting the cyclical nature of power, oppression, and helplessness.
Directed by Akshay Singh Thakur, the production won awards in the category of direction, music, sound design, and ensemble at the META Excellence in Theatre Awards Festival, 2025. The play is presented by the Rangabharan Cultural and Social Organization, based in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
