A look back at a 2015 interview where veteran actor Nana Patekar explained why he would never enter active politics.

Nana Patekar on Why He Would Never Join Politics

In a group interview in 2015 for Trade Guide magazine ahead of the release of his film Ab Tak Chhappan 2, veteran actor Nana Patekar opened up about various topics, including why he would never enter politics.

When asked if he would ever join politics, Nana stated, “No, what is the need? Acting in films and commenting on issues is like active politics as cinema is such a great medium. In proper politics, I won’t be allowed to say what I feel. I will have to stay inside the fixed parameters of the party, which I can’t do. If I say something nasty to the party chief, he will throw me out.”

Using a humorous example, he added, “Suppose, someone from my party eats cow dung or does something wrong, then I will have to say in front of the media that it wasn’t cow dung, it was Shrikhand. I personally feel an actor should never contest elections.”

Addressing whether his outspoken nature gets him into trouble, Nana said, “They are fools who think after speaking. The wise think before speaking. I always know what I am speaking.” He also recalled telling Balasaheb Thackeray directly when he disagreed with a statement, noting that the intention behind a statement must be clear.
