U.S. Supreme Court Clears Way for Christa Pike's Execution

The U.S. Supreme Court has allowed the execution of death row inmate Christa Pike to proceed following a last-minute halt.

The U.S. Supreme Court has allowed death row inmate Christa Pike's execution to proceed after it was halted at the last minute ahead of her scheduled September 30 execution.

Christa Pike's scheduled execution via lethal injection on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, was pulled up at the last minute after a federal appeals court temporarily halted it shortly before the original schedule. After multiple considerations, the U.S. Supreme Court has now cleared the way for Tennessee to proceed.

Pike, 50, had been scheduled to become the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than 200 years. She has spent three decades on death row after being convicted of the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow student at the Knoxville Job Corps. Colleen's mother and stepfather had travelled from Florida to attend the execution.

On September 30, shortly before Pike was scheduled to receive a lethal injection, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals issued the last-minute stay, saying it needed additional time to consider arguments from her attorneys concerning her history of severe childhood sexual abuse and the handling of those claims in her case.
