Varun Dhawan Highlights Biofortification

Actor and investor Varun Dhawan is highlighting biofortification as a method to improve the nutritional value of everyday staples like rice, dal, and atta. On World Food Day, the actor discussed his investment in Better Nutrition, a brand working with biofortified staples, as well as his efforts to explore the process on his own farm.

Explaining his interest in the concept, Varun stated that he is proud to be part of an initiative that could make a difference in India. He noted that he believed in the idea enough to invest in Better Nutrition and start biofortifying his own farm, expressing pride in the possibility of reaching millions of Indian homes. Additionally, the actor shared a video on social media to explain the concept and encourage learning about its potential role in nutrition.

Understanding Biofortification

Biofortification increases the levels of specific nutrients in crops as they grow, distinguishing it from conventional food fortification which adds nutrients during processing. This approach applies to staple crops such as wheat, rice, and millets, improving nutrient content in foods people already consume without requiring major diet changes. In 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated 17 biofortified varieties across eight crops to the nation on World Food Day.

Involvement with Better Nutrition

Varun has invested in Better Nutrition as an investor and brand ambassador. The brand offers biofortified staples including atta, rice, and dals through quick-commerce platforms and its website. Through these efforts and exploring the process on his farm, Varun aims to encourage greater awareness regarding the improvement of staple food nutritional value.
