GHAMASAAN Movie Review
Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, GHAMASAAN is a gritty and engaging crime drama starring Pratik Gandhi and Arshad Warsi. Set in the year 2006, the story follows Maharaj (Arshad Warsi), a dreaded dacoit operating in the jungles of Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh, along with his army, terrorizing the local population while politicians and police remain in cahoots with him.
After opposition leader Kumari Sarojini (Seema Azmi) raises her voice against Maharaj's atrocities, government pressure mounts. To pacify her, an honest officer stationed in Lucknow named Aditya Singh (Pratik Gandhi) is sent with a team of STF officials to ensure Maharaj's activities are halted and elections run smoothly. Rather than returning after the elections as planned, Aditya attempts to finish off Maharaj.
The film's story is written by Piiyush Singh and Ram Yash Singh, with a gripping screenplay and realistic dialogues by Tigmanshu Dhulia. Dhulia adopts a no-nonsense directorial approach, omitting romantic and item songs while weaving the banter between Aditya and his wife Aparna (Ishita Dutta) into the narrative.
Performances
The film features standout performances, particularly by Arshad Warsi in a terrorizing, never-seen-before avatar that marks one of the finest performances of his career. Pratik Gandhi maintains a strong position and delivers a fine performance alongside him. Rajpal Yadav plays a crucial part as Kalika, breaking his image while raising laughs in some scenes. The supporting cast includes Ishita Dutta, Jatin Goswami (Angad), Deepraj Rana (Inspector Harsh), Seema Azmi, Pankaj Saraswat (S K Dubey), Mrityunjay Pandey (Rizwan), Paritosh Sand (Madhura Prasad), Anurag Thakur (Balaram Yadav), and Hemant Dandotiya (Lakhua).
Technical Aspects
Anuj Garg provides the background score, which stays in sync with the film's mood, alongside the song 'Dhaaye Dhaaye'. The production features cinematography by Dev Agarwal, authentic production design by Amrish and Daya, realistic costumes by Tulika Dhuliya, gory action, and editing by Sourabh Prabhudesai.
Ultimately, GHAMASAAN benefits from Tigmanshu Dhulia’s direction, gripping moments, and strong performances, despite a simple narrative and a few flaws in the second half.
