HEART OF THE BEAST Movie Review: An Engaging Survival Drama

HEART OF THE BEAST Movie Review

HEART OF THE BEAST is an engaging survival drama directed by David Ayer and starring Brad Pitt. The story follows James Belmont (Brad Pitt), a retired command sergeant major flying his seaplane through remote regions of Alaska. Accompanying him is his dog, Odin (Uber), a former combat scouting dog who lost a leg in combat and wears a prosthetic limb. After James's health deteriorates and his plane crashes, the nearest human settlement is 58 miles away. James and Odin must cover the entire distance on foot while battling harsh natural conditions and wild animals.

The film's story is written by Cameron Alexander, with minimal dialogue and a lovely monologue. David Ayer's direction is unhurried, beautifully introducing the setting and protagonist. A standout element of the film is the bond between James and Odin, including the unique portrayal of a canine suffering from PTSD.

Brad Pitt delivers a terrific performance, showcasing physical and emotional vulnerability. The dog, Uber, gives a remarkable performance, alongside supporting cast members J K Simmons as Watkins and Anna Lambe as the girl in the pickup.

The film features minimal yet impactful music by Jared Michael Fry, breathtaking cinematography by Mauro Fiore capturing New Zealand locales, authentic production design by Greg Berry, authentic costumes by Amanda Neale, and functional editing by Dody Dorn.
