STREET FIGHTER Movie Review: Action and Spectacle Overshadowed by Weak Writing

Read the CineFlix Media review of STREET FIGHTER, directed by Kitao Sakurai and starring Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji.

STREET FIGHTER Movie Review

Directed by Kitao Sakurai, STREET FIGHTER follows the story of two friends, Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo), whose bond is broken following the first World Warrior Tournament and the tragic death of Master Gouken (Don Lee) at the hands of Akuma (Roman Reigns). Six years later, the second tournament in Metrolao brings them back into proximity, while the tournament's organizer, M Bison (David Dastmalchian), harbors ulterior motives.

Based on the video game of the same name, the film features a screenplay by T J Fixman and Kitao Sakurai that is deemed weak, though the direction handles grandeur well. Notable visual elements include an anime-style prologue and flashback portions, along with standout fight scenes involving Ryu, Ozeki (Hirooki Goto), and Blanka (Jason Momoa). However, the film suffers from sudden, unexplained developments, flat humor, and haphazard editing.

Performances and Technical Aspects

Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji deliver strong, entertaining, and nuanced performances. The cast also features Callina Liang, David Dastmalchian, Andrew Schulz as Dan, Mel Jarnson as Cammy, Eric André, and special appearance by Jason Momoa. Vidyut Jammwal delivers a superb turn as Dhalsim, while 50 Cent (Balrog), Cody Rhodes (Guile), Olivier Richters (Zangief), and Orville Peck (Vega) round out the cast.

Musically, Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson provide an exhilarating score, complemented by impressive cinematography from Ken Seng, top-class production design by Kevin Kavanaugh, and costumes by Kym Barrett. Deftly choreographed action and global-standard VFX stand out as major strengths of the production.

Conclusion

Ultimately, STREET FIGHTER scores points for its impressive action, grand visuals, and fine performances, but weak writing and unconvincing developments dilute its overall impact. The film will appeal mainly to fans of the video game franchise.
