The Social Reckoning Movie Review: A Relevant and Thought-Provoking Drama

The Social Reckoning is a relevant and thought-provoking drama directed by Aaron Sorkin, exposing the darker side of social media. The star cast features Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, and Jeremy Strong.

Set in 2019, the story follows Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), a data engineer on Facebook's civic integrity team in San Francisco, USA. Disillusioned after internal research reveals the company prioritizes engagement and profits over user safety, Frances becomes a whistleblower. During a town hall, media relations executive Teddy Marks (Billy Magnussen) warns employees against speaking to journalists. One such journalist is Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) of The Wall Street Journal, who is working on an exposé and ultimately connects with Frances.

Aaron Sorkin's screenplay is gripping, unconventional, and niche, featuring sharp dialogues inspired by real-life incidents. The film is divided into chapters and includes a prologue that helps contextualize the issues. The bond between Frances and Jeff provides interesting character dynamics, and the depiction of Mark Zuckerberg's autocratic functioning serves as an eye-opener.

On the flip side, the film can become technical and confusing, with extensive focus on American politics that may have limited appeal for viewers in India. Additionally, the film leaves certain political personalities unnamed, does not depict the congressional hearing, and serves as a standalone sequel to The Social Network [2010].

In terms of performances, Mikey Madison delivers a power-packed portrayal of a socially awkward tech nerd. Jeremy Allen White delivers a worthy performance and dominates certain scenes, while Jeremy Strong's performance feels somewhat mechanical. Supporting cast members Bill Burr (Charlie Garrigan), Wunmi Mosaku (Raya), Portia Doubleday (Kaylee), Michael Braugher (Deputy Otumbo), and Sierra Capri (Officer Diaz) also leave notable marks.

Technical aspects include seamless music by Alexandre Desplat, functional cinematography by Jeff Cronenweth, authentic production design by Jon Hutman, costumes by Susan Lyall, and sharp editing by Alan Baumgarten.
